Фразовые глаголы с up, down, on, off и in кажутся бесконечным списком, пока не замечаешь, что частица часто подсказывает смысл. Down — вниз, меньше. In — внутрь.
Серия открывается набором «Come или go»: come up here, go down, come in, go out and play. Затем пять обзорных наборов: глаголы с дополнением и без (turn on the computer, sit down), синонимы из одного слова (call off = cancel, calm down = relax), разделяемые глаголы (call the meeting off, но только throw it away).
Up: восемь наборов
- вверх: go up, get up, stand up, pick up the cookie from the floor, roll up your sleeves;
- лучше, больше: dress up, cheer up, top up your account, build up your confidence;
- подготовка: set up a business, warm up before the workout, heat up the soup;
- появление: turn up late, show up for work, pop up out of nowhere, bring up a topic;
- поиск информации: look it up in a dictionary, read up;
- разрыв: break up with someone, smash up, crack up;
- до конца: eat up, finish up, use up all our savings, wrap up and go home;
- громче, больше: speak up, pile up, stock up, turn up the volume.
Down, on, off и in
Down — вниз и меньше. Put it down, write down my phone number, take down the painting. Calm down, cut down, keep it down. Поломки и разочарования: my car broke down, you will never let me down. Разрушение: tear down, burn down, close down. И отдельный набор про ливень: it’s pouring down, bucketing down, pelting down.
Put your hat on, try this dress on, hold on tight. Turn on, switch on, log on. Carry on, go on, keep on, move on. У get on несколько значений: get on the bus (сесть) и get on well with someone (ладить).
Take your shoes off, cut off a piece, wipe off. Set off, head off, I’m off to the shops. Call off, break off, turn off the TV, hard work pays off. И три способа уснуть: nod off, doze off, drift off.
In — внутрь и присоединиться. Come in, let me in, I can’t get in, barge in. Fill in this form, stay in. Join in, add in, take in. Sink in и rub it in — когда до вас наконец дошло и когда кто-то сыплет соль на рану.
Выражения с get, take, look, keep и have собраны отдельно: фразовые глаголы с get, take и look.
